There’s no overcoming the fact that the majority of online dating strongly favors the beautiful and the extroverted.
Those who are reasonably attractive and able to push themselves to overcome their shyness can find success, too.
But there are no guarantees in the online dating world!
That’s the thing about online dating specifically and love in general. They don’t work like most things. Increased effort and more experience don’t guarantee success.
I consider myself one of the lucky ones to have met someone online that I fell in love with. In the end, it was a very unhealthy relationship but we dated on-and-off for almost 18 months. That’s an eternity for an online dating experience!
I also dated a sweetheart of a guy for a few months and, of course, the Brit that I mention regularly. Both of them were online, too. I met my fabulous pal, DEF, on OKCupid — by far my best success from that particular dating app.
But the true, compatible matches for me are few and far between. As I’ve gotten older and fine-tuned what I’m looking for, my dates have only decreased.
I’m quirky and finicky. I’m almost 50. I’m not looking for casual sex or a FWB.

The other two guys met their girlfriends online (on different apps). One of the guys had recently switched to a new app and within a few weeks met someone perfectly suited for him!
In fact, I recently switched from Bumble to Hinge and had a second date over the weekend. This was my first second date since August of 2018! I actually want to see him again — I don’t think I’ve had a third date with someone in at least 2 years.
I wasn’t particularly optimistic that switching to Hinge would lead to any dates (much less second dates), but the idea of a fresh dating app made sense to me. It turns out that changing apps was the new sea my dating life needed.
